Building
Regulations
Building regulations apply to most new buildings and many alterations of existing buildings across England and Wales, whether domestic, commercial or industrial.
Compliance is a legal requirement.
At BTP we offer in-house Part L Calculations, Part O Calculations and Energy Statements.
1
Part L Calculations
There are two main methods for carrying out Part L calculations.
Simplified Energy Model (SBEM) - Primarily used for non-domestic buildings such as offices, shops and schools.
Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) - Used for domestic properties.
Both methodologies evaluate a building's energy performance by considering several factors, including:
-
Construction materials
-
Insulation levels
-
Efficiency of heating, cooling and ventilation systems
-
Efficiency of lighting solutions
-
Building orientation and shape
-
The primary aim of Part L is to reduce carbon emissions. More efficient buildings consume less energy which leads to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a lower carbon footprint.
Efficiency also helps to reduce running costs which equates to reduced energy bills for homeowners and businesses.
Part L Regulations are mandatory. Failure to meet the required standard can result in penalties or even a planning rejection.
With sustainability at the forefront of construction standard's across the globe energy standards continue to become more stringent. Ensuring buildings meet or exceed current Part L standards means they are better prepared for future updates to regulations.

Part O Calculations
Part O covers overheating in new residential buildings only. Part O was introduced in 2021 with the aim of encouraging the design and construction of buildings that limit unwanted solar gain during summer months, providing occupants with adequate interior cooling.
3
Energy Statements
Energy Statements outline how a building will meet energy efficiency standards set by the local planning authority. The statement will cover all aspects of the energy efficiency plan for your building.
