St Andrews Health Centre, London

St Andrew's Health Centre forms part of a 964 home

masterplan in East London serving up to 20,000 local people on a three hectare disused hospital site.

The low-carbon scheme includes three linear blocks,

each planned around a central courtyard and arranged to form streets and clear boundaries

between public and private space.

The healthcare centre accommodates a GP surgery,

pharmacy and community health services, open 7

days a week.

Facilities are also available for local networks of

community groups and voluntary organisations.

The consultation rooms are arranged around a

central open courtyard space over two levels as part

of the residential courtyard block.

The services design was developed to meet the

Trust's onerous brief to naturally ventilate the

accommodation and avoid the use of air

conditioning. This resulted in detailed thermal

modelling which identified the design of the opening

windows and facade orientation.

Cited in the Mayor's Housing Design

Supplementray Planning Guidance as an

examplar project for both its contemporary design

and internal space standards.
